At Symbology, it's our jam to make social responsibility sexy. So it's no surprise that we jumped at the opportunity to make the newest accessory--aka the ubiquitous face mask--stylish and sustainable. Cause those N95s aren't really sparking joy in any of us, k?
We took excess fabric from our Summer production to create these gorgeous little masks, ranging from our most popular geometric and botanical prints. And yes, the leopard print. Meowwww.
We want to be clear that these are not medical-grade masks; however, they help limit the spread of Covid-19 via droplets emitted into the air. By wearing your mask, practicing social distancing, and adopting a safe and healthy lifestyle, we can all contribute to stopping the spread of Covid-19.
Ethical Face Mask Features:Put in the washing machine on the gentle cycle with hot water for sanitization or wash by hand and let sit in the sun to disinfect. Let the mask sit out for 2-3 days to allow any potential virus molecules to die off.
It’s no doubt that masks have become one of the most popular accessories. While there are people who may not have access to medical-grade masks, fashion brands are making strong efforts to make masks available to the world. Although these masks are not medical-grade, they are certainly better than nothing. Wearing a mask can protect the people around you from the spread of droplets. It’s also recommended that doubling up on a mask can offer better protection.
All of our masks at Symbology have a pocket where you can insert a paper filter to keep protection strong and breathable. Having multiple masks on hand has been a useful tip when it comes to cleaning your mask. If you have a few that you can cycle through, you can sanitize the masks that need it while still looking fresh and fabulous. Take a look at our new sustainable masks offered in our most popular prints!
Our Commitment to Sustainability:It's probably safe to say that face masks aren't going anywhere for a while. We care about our customers and their safety and wanted to find a way to protect them and our planet. After finishing our Summer Collection, we decided to upcycle our scrap material and start making masks that offer safety and style, because who said you can't have both?! Making masks has allowed us to cut back on our own waste, and make environmentally friendly masks available to the customers we love so much. By using naturally derived materials, all of our masks are breathable and biodegradable, making life safe and beautiful from start to end. Take a look at our new sustainable masks offered in our most popular prints!

Keep on wearing your favorite pair of over-the-knee boots as long as you can! Pair them with a bright, flirty dress for a look that shows off just enough skin while still keeping your legs warm.
Nothing says “I’m ready for spring” like reintroducing bright colors back into your wardrobe. Layer a classic denim jacket with a bright, eye-catching skirt and a basic tank - you’ll feel springy, but also prepared in case the finicky weather decides to take a turn.
Don’t pack up that cozy sweater just yet! Instead of pairing it with jeans or tights, opt for a lightweight skirt and some short boots. Perfect for a look that shows a little leg, but won’t leave you completely freezing if a cold front hits.
Trade-in that big puffer jacket you’ve been sporting for the last couple of months for something a little lighter. Throw on a fun bomber with your go-to jeans and you’ve got a casual outfit just right for the weeks in-between seasons.
Another go-to alternative for your bulky winter coat. Layer a duster jacket over your favorite dress to keep you warm in the morning, then just take it off when the afternoon sun comes out and you want something lighter.

We’ll just start this out by stating the obvious - anyone can wear any style of clothing they like. The only thing that truly matters at the end of the day is that YOU feel confident in your outfit. That being said, we all have uniquely beautiful body shapes, and choosing certain styles based on your body type can help you find pieces that accentuate your favorite features and fit like a dream. We created this little guide to help you figure out which of our styles may work best with your body shape:
This might be you if your bust is larger than the rest of your body, your hips are narrow, and your midsection is fuller.
For this body type, we recommend styles that draw attention to your shoulders and legs, as well as those that create a more defined waistline. Our Maxi Wrap styles like the Stylized Feather Wrap Dress & Black Cherry Blossom Wrap Dress styles are perfect for this - their V-neck draws attention towards the shoulders, the tie-waist adds definition to the waist and the slit in front opens up just enough to show off those gorgeous legs of yours ;) Our Butterfly Maxi is also a great choice with its flattering butterfly sleeves and tie-waist. For tops, our Baby Cacti Peplum Blouse works great as it's designed to create a more defined waistline. Open font jackets like our Haori-Inspired Jackets also flatter your frame by adding long vertical lines.
This might be you if your shoulders and hip measurements are roughly the same, you have a larger bust & booty, and you have a defined waist.
For this body type, we recommend styles that enhance your natural waistline and show off your curves. Our Midi Wrap Dresses work fabulously with this body type, as the more fitted top highlights the waist and flows effortlessly off the hips. Our Shirtdress styles also work well on this body type, as well as V necklines like those on our tunics. For outerwear, draw attention to your waist with belted jackets like the Velvet Peacock Duster!
This might be you if your shoulder and hip measurements are nearly the same and you have a straighter build.
For this body type, we recommend styles that define your waist and hips, like our Empress Maxi style. Its fitted top helps to define your midsection while the swingy skirt adds a little ‘oomph’ to the hips and instantly creates an hourglass silhouette. Our Cropped Jumpsuits are another great option! V-neck tops also look great on you as they highlight your collarbone.
This might be you if your hips are broader than your shoulders and you have a defined waist that’s narrow compared to your hips.
For this body type, we recommend styles that accentuate your top half and your defined waist while balancing out your hips. The defined waist and flouncy skirt on our Midi Wrap styles look amazing on this body type. Our Maxi Wraps also work well with this shape with their curve-defining tie-waist and V-neck that helps to open up your top half. Peplum tops will also help to accentuate your waist, as well as waist-length jackets like our Bombers.
This might be you if your shoulders are the broadest part of your body and your waist and hips are narrower.
We recommend styles that add volume near your hips and elongate your neckline. Our Midi Wrap styles are great for this, with their deep-V neckline and fuller skirt, as well as our Midi Skirts, which also help balance out the hips. You look great in V-neck tops that create a long, lengthened neckline as well as peplum, which adds some 'oomph' to your hips. For jackets, you can't go wrong with waist-length pieces or longer, belted styles that accentuate the waist.

If you've never used Afterpay before, we'll give you the lowdown on how it works. Just look for the Afterpay logo on any of our product pages, and it'll show you exactly how much each of the 4 installments will be. Then go ahead and add the item to your cart and checkout like normal, selecting 'Installments by Afterpay' as your payment method. Once you've paid that first installment, you're set! Just make sure to pay off the installments every two weeks, and you won't have to pay any additional interest or fees.
We love this handy little tool because for so many people, breaking up the cost into four smaller payments is much more manageable, and can help alleviate some of the stress that comes with buying higher-priced items. We want ethical fashion to become the norm, not the exception, and Afterpay is one way we're able to do this without having to sacrifice quality or ethics. Inclusivity is so important to us, and we're grateful that systems like Afterpay exist to help us in our mission to democratize sustainable fashion.

]]>Most importantly? We designed these pieces to be closet staples and investment pieces that you can wear before, during, and after pregnancy -- or as we like to say: for baby bump, breastfeeding, and beyond ;)
One of the major components we wanted to make sure our maternity pieces had was comfort. These pieces are lightweight, breathable, and made with buttery-soft fabric that make them comfortable enough to sleep in, but fashionable enough to wear out and about. In fact, one of our customers recently commented that our jumpsuit is "so light and airy, it's like wearing pajamas!" Another one of our customers told us her jumpsuit was so comfortable she ended up ACTUALLY wearing it to bed! As far as we're concerned, that's the best compliment we could possibly receive ;)
We didn't just want to make our pieces comfortable, we also wanted to make them items that you would enjoy wearing - that would make you feel sexy and confident in such an important stage of life. It was also important to us that they could continue to look beautiful and flattering throughout your pregnancy, so we included features like elastic waistbands and longer inseams in our jumpsuits to ensure they could grow with you through all the stages of your pregnancy.
Finally, we wanted to make sure these pieces were functional not only during your pregnancy but after as well. Our favorite little detail? Almost all of the pieces feature either a wrap-style top or a snap at the bust to provide easy access for our breastfeeding mamas out there.
Shop the collection here for comfortable, functional & ethical pieces that'll last you long after the 9 months is over.
]]>There's virtually no options for ethically made or sustainably made wedding dresses in general, let alone those that are at a reasonable price point. So we've decided to brave the daunting world of bridal wear and offer wedding and bridesmaids dresses that are affordable, ethically made AND can be worn multiple times. Kinda fits our whole sustainability thing #amiright
We took our best selling, most figure flattering dresses and elevated them with beautiful hand embroidery, beadwork and applique. The bridal collection features stunning bohemian-inspired wedding dresses priced under $800. Because it's just the right mix of comfortable and formal, you'll be able to get lots of wear out of these dresses. Rock it to a beach soiree or fancy holiday party and you're set.
And if there's a style you're dying to have that we don't currently carry, please let us know. We always love feedback!
Dresses that are flattering to a range of body shapes and sizes that fit a cohesive color story. And can be worn more than once. We want all bridesmaids to feel comfortable and confident in their dresses (aka avoid that horrific 27 Dresses moment).
Over the past two years, we've been getting a lot of requests for wedding and bridesmaids dresses. Last year, we outfitted five brides just with our white maxi wrap dresses. That our designs were able to be part of such a special celebration filled my heart with gratitude and excitement to do more.
While having a bridal line was never part of my original vision for Symbology, I am beyond excited to delve into it. It actually allows us to collaborate with more women artisans and give them sustained orders, as embroidery and beadwork are more expensive to make.
The wedding dress you choose should be beautiful and reflect your values, with a shelf life of more than one day. We have been so honored to be part of celebrating special moments with you; I hope you'll think of Symbology for your big day.
We have set up our wedding and bridesmaids collection for preorder for Feb 2020 delivery, with the ability to try on at our Fort Worth location. If you have questions or special requests please email us at sales@symbologyclothing.com.

By Marissa Heyl, Symbology Founder
Seven years ago, I started Symbology to empower women through fashion. Not just our artisan partners, but customers as well--pear-shaped, petite, big breasted, Amazonian and all lovelies in between. As a curvy woman who loves her carbs, I've always found the emaciated fashion model thing kinda bullshit. And the snobbery that continues to pervade certain boutiques. Fashion is about as democratic a platform as it gets to create positive change--why shouldn't we all as women be able to participate? Aren't we all worthy of empowering each other and feeling empowered?
The ethical and sustainable fashion space really needs more plus size options--hell, even fast fashion is sorely behind on offering inclusive sizes that are fashion-forward and flattering.
That sentiment has been echoed by many of you, my persistent and eager ladybirds, inspiring me to start carrying plus sizes through size 3X. I will say though that it hasn't been easy. As a small label with limited batch, ethically handmade production, creating plus sizes and getting the fit right is a challenge--it is not just about adding an inch or two when grading up in size but really thinking about (and listening hardcore to) our customers and how they want the pieces to fit and flatter.
Making inclusive clothing is also really expensive. The cost of making a plus size dress is substantially higher, requiring more fabric and a different pattern altogether--not to mention that sustainable fabrics cost more. We have had many returns for fit issues on our new XXL and 3X sizes, and have worked tirelessly to readjust the patterns to accommodate. It's part and parcel of learning to be a better business and actually creating pieces women want to wear.
But let me tell you, when we get positive feedback from customers about how they have finally found a dress that is flattering and ethically produced--making them feel beautiful and powerful--we get ALL THE FEELS. It brings me immense joy to read the glowing reviews and see a beaming smile on the faces of customers at our popups. Symbology has got you covered, literally ;)
As I've said before, no label can do it all. We are constantly improving and adjusting to accommodate our customer's needs and requests. Symbology is now 100% vegan (thank you for the push, vegan friends) and we are offering more sustainable fabrics like modal and organic cotton. We will start carrying maternity and breast-feeding friendly styles and a new bridal + bridesmaids line next month, and I could not be more jazzed about it.
Thank you fellow Symbologists for being part of our journey, and keep the feedback coming!
Check out some of the giddiness inducing reviews below for our new sizing:
"It was so soo nice to find a fair trade brand with something other than a sack for those of us that are on the busty and curvy side. I got the xxl as a typical size 16 with a 40DD bust and it fit flawlessly. I feel like this is one of those designs that can dress up or down and flatters a wide range of body types. The material is wonderful and I now want even more dresses in this luscious fabric."
-Katrina Owyns on our maxi wrap dress
"I have a big bustline, and I found the cut to be very flattering. I can't get over the fact that the fabric is hand printed. It's a beautiful piece."
-Alison Tuck on our Cherry Blossom maxi wrap dress
"I've always been a curvy girl, I've never been able to fit into a "normal" size. I was so excited to learn about Symbology--the clothes actually make me feel good...with having a baby and moving around and still wanting to look nice and go on a date with my husband, these clothes allow me to do that."
-Heather Knight on our cropped jumpsuit
]]>Jumpsuits are probably the closest we can get to wearing a onesie in public. They're comfy, easy to throw on and make you look fierce with none of the effort.
But we get it--it's daunting to shop online for a jumpsuit, when perhaps you've got hit with unsightly cameltoe or stuck in a I've-gotta-pee-like-whoa situation where you cursed the difficulty of getting the jumpsuit in optimal position. Or it's just not flattering.
Not to worry, we've designed our jumpsuits to fit a range of body types that also allows for easy putting on/removal and requires virtually no styling. We have in fact converted quite a few "I'm not a jumpsuit kinda woman" types. So read on, and find the jumpsuit that 'suits' you best ;)

Great for mamas with these body types/features:
We have had a lot of questions about our sustainable practices and want to let you know about our central focus and areas in which we are expanding our offerings.
For us at Symbology, sustainability is about empowering women, creating jobs for artisans and preserving culture. Putting handmade art forms like block printing and hand embroidery —that are in danger of becoming obsolete by fast fashion—at the front and center of our designs. It’s about empowering women—providing training, livable wages and sustained income for our artisan partners in India. Sustainability for us is using high quality, plant-based fabrics like modal (which feels like silk but is also 100% vegan) and ASO free dyes.
We are constantly experimenting with new sustainable materials to put planet and people first. We would love to use more expensive fabrics like aloe vera and tencel but they are really expensive. Add the additional cost of hand printing and you have a dress that’s around double the cost of what we currently offer. Keeping our prices reasonable for you--while still offering a beautifully handcrafted piece--is important as we want sustainable fashion to be a democratic movement that all women can participate in.
We love getting ideas and feedback from you to help us create the best clothing that suits you and your values. We have learned so much from you, and that’s something we are so grateful for.

If you're looking for a story that gives all the feels, look no further ladybird. For every adorable hair accessory purchased, Headbands of Hope gives one to a child with cancer. And how befitting that bossbabe founder Jess Ekstrom got her inspiration from the most magical place on earth--Disney World of course.
When she was there on a photography internship, she photographed kids with life-threatening illnesses who wanted to visit Disney World as their main wish from wish-granting organizations.
Jess noticed a lot of the kids were wearing headbands after losing their hair to chemotherapy. She felt a spark to do something to help them feel confident and beautiful during such a tough time. To fulfill this need, she created Headbands of Hope during her junior year of college at North Carolina State University.
Headbands of Hope is now carried in thousands of stores across the world and has been supported by dozens of celebrities like Lea Michele and Lauren Conrad. And more importantly, the brand has donated headbands to every children's hospital in America and 15 countries.
They offer some seriously cute accessories, from boho chic headpieces to wraps and beanies. And friends, they even have a monthly headband subscription! To check out their amazing designs visit https://www.headbandsofhope.com/.
]]>After months of devastating monsoons that have wreaked havoc in India, we are thrilled to finally announce the launch of our Fall collection: Seeking Searenity. Unlike our typical collections inspired by motifs unique to a particular culture, we instead found inspiration in a resource we all share as humans, which is currently threatened more than ever by pollution--our oceans.
Lead designer Marissa Heyl watched ‘A Plastic Ocean,’ a documentary about the devastating effects our consumption and waste have on our oceans, and aimed to use her collection as a platform to explore that relationship. We will donate 10% of all sales in October to the Coral Reef Alliance to support their reef conservation efforts.
The oceanic ecosystem abounds with stunning imagery, which inspired our Blooming Algae and Seascape coral prints. Coral is a symbolic protection against evil and in some cultures considered a good luck charm.
]]>Clothing is a means of communicates the personal to the world at large, shaping first impressions and reflecting our identity. As Clinton Kelly said, “How you dress tells others how you expect to be treated.”
Think about how you felt when you wear your favorite flattering dress or perfectly tailored suit to an interview. Or, on the other hand, how you feel having to wear your grandma’s knitted sweater to family get-togethers--ya know, the one with the reindeer and snowmen on it. The study of such feelings is part of a growing field of research called enclothed cognition--how we don’t just think with our brains, but with our bodies.
Think about what you’re wearing today. Do you know what material it’s made from, or in which country it was produced? Who sewed your shirt? Or how it got to the store?
Let’s think back to a time before Wal-mart and boundless polyester. Centuries ago, the great empires of Rome and Egypt deemed purple the imperial standard. Purple dyes were very rare and expensive--it took some 12,000 tiny mollusks from the Mediterranean to make about 1 gram of dye. To wear a garment made of silk communicated to others that you were a person of means, as silk was very expensive, having to be shipped from the East.
For centuries, the clothing one wore had important economic and social implications. Tailors and seamstresses used natural fabrics to custom-make clothing. So when did we begin to lose our connection with the clothes we wore?
Fast forward to the latter part of the 20th century in America, when clothing became mass produced and commercialized--what we call “ready to wear” in the industry. Advertisements told women that these new threads were convenient, affordable, and up-to-date--which could be replaced easily as trends changed.
This conspicuous consumption has become so pervasive that it’s almost all we associate with the fashion we consume--until recently. The ethical fashion movement has swung the pendulum the opposite direction so that we pay attention to our clothing and its heritage.
The West African symbol Sankofa demonstrates this concept beautifully. It symbolizes a respect for our ancestry, to learn from our past, so that we can achieve our full potential moving forward.
Each printed motif is imbued with meaning, reflecting our collective notions of strength, joy and vitality--in short, our shared humanity.
They say you are what you eat. What about what you wear? One way to look at it is through the lens of the slow food movement, which encourages people to have an intimate understanding and consideration of where your food comes from and the people behind it.
Slow food celebrates cuisines of different cultures and regions--likewise, ethical fashion cultivates a relationship with the people and materials involved in making our clothes. You are making an investment in quality, handmade pieces that really honor the artistry and craftsmanship that went into their production.
When you put on a Symbology dress, you are making a fashion statement in more ways than one. You are celebrating a unique cultural artform that requires incredibly skilled hands. You are rejecting the exploitation and waste of fast fashion. And most importantly, you are empowering the women who made it.
So to turn Mr. Kelly's on its head, I'd say ‘How you dress tells others how you treat the world.”
]]>The Fashion Revolution movement, which challenges consumers to ask brands "Who Made My Clothes?", has grown stronger than ever. We love meeting more and more customers at ethical popups and seeing amazing brands enter the space every day--there is practically an ethical alternative for every fast fashion brand out there. That kind of competition provides a variety of ethical options for those who want to make sustainability a lifestyle choice, while keeping us brands on our toes so that we provide the best quality items possible.
While our main focus continues to be on training and employing women artisans, we are constantly working improve our supply chain transparency. Our vegan friends and environmental champions alike push us to offer fabric alternatives that are sustainable. We are in the process of getting eco-friendly and ethical labor certification from all aspects of our supply chain and look forward to migrating our cut-and-sew operations to a refugee cooperative in Dallas.
Symbology artisan partners in Jaipur
However, as the rights of women, refugees, LGBT friends, Muslims and other minorities continue to be deteriorated, it is all the more crucial for us consumers to use our spending power to support businesses that create real value for our planet and people. We have to be vigilant and show our solidarity, else these exploitive industries and policies will never change.
If you haven't seen The True Cost documentary (which is free to stream on Netflix), get on it. It's a powerful look into the devastating reality of fast fashion; however, it leaves the viewer feeling a bit helpless.
Don't fret, though. We have compiled a brief list of easy (and enjoyable) ways to take part in the Fashion Revolution.

]]>Initial arrival to India was a struggle to seasonal fog, but the trip was well worth it. I had never been to a developing country before, so stepping out of the New Delhi airport was entry to a new world. The weather was mild, and the sky hazy, but mostly, there were people, people, and people everywhere, even places I wouldn’t expect them to be. There were signs, sounds, things all vying for my attention -- the city screamed of chaos, and life. Right at the exit, I met Marissa, Symbology’s lovely founder, and we set off for a 5-hour drive to Jaipur.
Indian traffic, something I will probably never get used to. Traffic lines exist, but mean little. Let’s say that I never knew cars could be so nimble until I came to India.
We arrived Jaipur much later that day, but I could tell it was very different from New Delhi. It is less of a “big city”, and there is more decorated, famously pink, stone in place of glass and steel. There is less tech and more knick-knacks, and animals (mostly dogs) on the streets. Still lively, but a lot less of a “big city”, and in my opinion, more charming. In comparison to modern Delhi, Jaipur feels more laid back and artistic. The interior of our hotel room at Pearl Palace (essentially Marissa’s second home) was also beautifully furnished with patterned curtains, wallpapers, and paintings, which contributed to the artistic vibe. India’s art is colors, patterns, organic swirls, both natural and complex. Different from I usually see.
I slept well- work began the next day.

Green college student as I am, I imagined work in business to include suits, dry-erase markers, and white-lit offices, but at Symbology, this is not the case. During the 6 days I was there, we covered product sampling, printmaking, research on new artisan techniques, and negotiation. It wasn’t as if there wasn’t a plan, but we were generally at several places doing many things in a day. It was a little chaotic, like India itself, but also fun, and at most importantly, we got the work done.
On day one, we visited our supplier’s office, which is situated right above a cute tea house, which greatly pleased a tea-enthusiast as myself. We dressed casually, but nicely (suits myth, busted). There, I saw the physical blocks, some of which I had designed or contributed to, for the first time, and held them in my hands. They were in a box, ready for their first round of sample printing. That was truly a magical moment for me.
A visit that was only supposed to take a few hours lasted the rest of the afternoon. Luckily for us, our suppliers are creative, people, too. We pulled up digital files of our new Fall ‘18 designs (look forward to them, they’re great! ;D ) and finalized sizing, spacing, colorways, and materials. Sharing ideas, critiquing, and thinking of new things together for our line -- it was a fun, invigorating process where we could really exercise our creative sides.
At 6:00pm, we closed our booklet of Neelam colors (swatches of standard colors used in manufacturing) and agreed to meet the next day. Today was the theoreticals, tomorrow would be the practicals. We were going to meet our artisans, and see pattern creation with our own eyes.
What's the one ritual that every culture around the world celebrates? It's not weddings, though that's a good guess. It's food.
Gathering together with friends and family around the table to devour good food is a simple act that unites us all as humans. So this holiday, let's relish it. To serve each other, after all, nourishes not only the body but the soul.
We are super excited to share with you that we have partnered with artisan-focused Globein to create a beautiful table runner for their Serve box, a theme wonderfully apropos for the holidays.
The order was able to provide sustained employment for artisans like Kalyani and Lakshmi (pictured below) for several months. Kalyani and Lakshmi are screen print artists at a small workshop in Sanganer, a small town outside of Jaipur that is world-renowned for exquisite block and screen prints. They were part of the artisan team that crafted the scarves featured in Rachel Zoe's Box of Style, but need consistent orders to keep providing for their families.
This partnership with Globein was the perfect opportunity.
Kalyani has 5 children--2 daughters and 3 sons--who all live and work nearby, allowing them to meet frequently. Lakshmi has 1 daughter and 2 sons. She received an education through the eighth grade and was married shortly thereafter; since then has decided to break with local tradition and work outside her home to provide for her family. Through consistent orders like the table runner exclusive with Globein, Lakshmi is able to give all her children (including the girls) an opportunity to receive an education at a good school.
The amazing women behind the Globein artisan box have generously offered to give Symbologists a special gift for the holidays. Just enter code SYMBOLOGY for 50% off your first month's subscription to the Globein Premium Artisan Box. Woot! Check it out here: globein.com/box

Neolithic hunters considered red to be endowed with life-giving powers, placing red ochre into graves of their deceased. They ascribed the color magic powers--many archaeologists now stipulate that cave paintings marked with red ochre were placed to enhance fertility.
Many ancient cultures believed red brought protective powers against evil. Ruby amulettes in Mesopotamia were used as charms against the "evil eye". Red was worn in Germany in the Middle Ages as protection against the "red illnesses" like fever, rashes or even miscarriages.
Today, many cultures around the world celebrate red as a powerful color that evokes strong emotions.
India
Red is a particularly powerful color in India, symbolizing fire, fertility, love and beauty. Red is also representative of a certain time and place in one’s personal life, including when a woman gets married. A married woman can be identified by the red henna on her hands and the red powder, known as sindoor, worn along her hairline.
South Africa
In South Africa, red is associated with mourning, and the section of red in the country’s flag symbolizes violence and sacrifices that were made during the struggle for independence.
Thailand
Each day of the week is assigned a specific color and is linked with a particular God. Red is the color for Sundays, and it’s associated with Surya, a solar God, who was born on this day.
China
In Chinese culture, red symbolizes celebration and is believed to bring luck, prosperity and a long life.

Introducing the Origami Collection. Origami, literally “folding paper” when directly translated from Japanese, is a deceptively simple art. Origami first became prevalent in Japan during the 6th century with the availability of paper. Since paper was expensive, origami was originally a pastime for the elite or used for ceremonies. But as Japan modernized and paper became more commonplace, origami gained in popularity and many new patterns, shapes, and techniques were developed over time.
Every piece starts off as a flat sheet of paper, but with just the right steps and perfect creases, one can create something beautiful. Channeling the minimalist, yet bewitchingly complex essence of origami, Symbology has crafted a collection of crisp, bold, yet elegant designs.

We pretty much have down where and how to get ethically sourced clothing and lifestyle pieces, however when it comes to food, something we consume every day, buying ethically can be a bit more ambiguous. That's where fair trade comes in. Aside from shopping at local farmer's markets, you can support workers and farmers across the globe by looking for items that are Fair Trade Certified. We did some research on what it means to be Fair Trade Certified, how it helps, and what to buy so that your next meal will benefit more than just your appetite.
The concept of fair trade is essentially products made with respect for the people and environment that it impacts. A variety of third-party non-profit organizations such as Fair Trade USA have devised rigorous standards focused on transparency, fair labor practices, and protective environmental techniques. According to Fair Trade USA, their mission is to "inspire the rise of the Conscious Consumer and eliminate exploitation." A company can apply for fair trade status, and if they meet all of the 300+ standards, they will be granted certification. Today, over 1.2 million farming families in 70 developing nations benefit from fair trade practices.
The good news about fair trade food is that it is becoming more and more common at large retail companies. For instance, fair trade coffee, the original fair trade certified product, is widely available across the US with over 500 different brands available- you can even buy fair trade coffee in K-cups! Additionally, things like specialty chocolate, cane sugar and agave, and other sweeteners are popular fair trade products. Traditionally, sugar cane farmers are among the most exploited in the world because of fluctuating markets and prices, so buying fair trade supports this marginalized demographic.
If coffee and sweeteners aren't your thing, try buying fair trade produce! Bananas are by far the most popular and easy to find in your local grocery store, just look for the Fair Trade Certification sticker. Specialty supermarkets such as Whole Foods also carry numerous rices, grains, wines, teas, herbs, nuts and spices that are Fair Trade Certified. Recently, there has also been a push by the fair trade movement to certify more seafood providers who harvest fish ethically and sustainably.
The corporate agriculture model we currently employ is a system that is unfortunately extremely profit-driven and almost always exploits the worker and surrounding environment in developing nations. By investing in Fair Trade Certified food, not only are you ensuring that what you put on your plate is ethically sourced, you are improving the lives of hundreds of farmers and families. Buying fair trade is an investment in the health and livelihood of workers, the environment, and sustainable business in developing nations. As a company with a nearly identical mission, that sounds amazing to us!

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah is a love story that explores race and identity. Adichie is a Nigerian author known for her book Half of a Yellow Sun as well as her outspoken feminism (you may have seen her amazing ted talk entitled “We Should All be Feminists”). In Americanah, she tells the story of a young couple in Nigeria. After one immigrates to the United States and one is forced to live undocumented in the UK, they both face harsh realities about their race and legal status only to eventually reunite in their native country.
Hillbilly Ellegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis is written by J.D. Vance, a former marine and Yale graduate. Yance reflects on his upbringing in a family that moved from the Appalachian rust belt to Ohio to pursue the working-class American dream, and the societal struggles that came with their quest for upward mobility. His novel humorously navigates complex social issues in America and gives insight to the white, middle-class American demographic in the time of Donald Trump and a tumultuous election season.
You may have heard of Cheryl Strayed if you’ve read her critically acclaimed novel Wild. Tiny Beautiful Things is comprised of Strayed's articles from her days as an advice columnist. “Sugar,” Strayed’s pseudonym, responds to a wide scope of issues faced in the personal lives of men and women alike in a witty, funny, and blunt manner. This book is instantly relatable and inspirational, as Strayed has a way of cracking open the stories of those who write her and revealing “beautiful truths” behind everyday scenarios. I have been working my way through this novel this summer and find Strayed's advice both entertaining and insightful.
A Hope More Powerful Than the Sea is based on the events of the Arab Spring tells the story of a young woman struggling to survive as a Syrian refugee. Symbology social media expert Marisa is currently reading this book and was blown away by the extent of the main character Doaa al Zamel’s difficulties on her dangerous journey to safety. This read will make you feel deeply for the characters and understand the plight of refugees through a new perspective.
Juugad is a Hindi word which roughly means to “ find a low-cost solution to any problem in an intelligent way.” Jugaad Innovation explains the key points of this theory and points to rapidly developing nations as models for Western countries to improve and expand. When planning your home, there are numerous chic and sustainable materials that bring beauty into a home sustainably. For flooring, using materials such as EcoTimber, cork, or bamboo looks amazing. Spruce up your kitchen with a number of tiling options, such as handmade Fireclay tile. Additionally, you won't believe how similar using recycled glass looks instead of granite for countertops. We are in love with all the incredible options for home innovation that TreeHouse provides, found here.
As mentioned above, bamboo is a great option for sustainable sourced materials due to it's rapid growth, making it one of the most sustainable materials in the world. Utilize bamboo in all sorts of ways, from stylish shelves and lamps to bamboo window shades.
Revamp your walls with eco-friendly paints. Found in a variety of colors, eco friendly paints are free of VOC's (volatile organic compounds) that harm the environment and are found in your standard painting materials. Try all-natural milk paints, which are free of VOC's and petroleum.
Save money and find a new hobby by creating a home garden. Start small by planting some simple herbs or go all out with your favorite seasonal veggies. Adding indoor plants as well is a great way to purify air and create a greener everyday environment.
A super simple way to immediately reduce environmental impact is to switch out household cleaning products for green products. "Clean" cleaning products are becoming increasingly available, as name brand materials are often filled with harmful chemicals bad for personal health and the surrounding environment. Some of our chic favorites include The Aromatherapy Co, Mrs. Meyers, and The Laundress.
Lighting your home shouldn't have to create a large energy strain. Installing light dimmers, motion-sensored lights, and replacing lightbulbs to LED are just a few ways you can reduce your electricity bill. Additionally, designing spaces with skylights is both beautiful and efficient. There are also numerous sustainable light fixtures (check out our chic faves here and here) available that will brighten your home whilst maintaining a stylish look.
Landscaping using local plants is the most sustainable way to beautify your outdoor space and maximize ecological efficiency. Since plants area already local to environmental conditions, they create a dynamic landscape that changes with the seasons and does not require extra water or damaging fertilizers.
We are firm believers that buying ethically sourced products should go beyond our clothing pieces! Reclaimed wood, recycled materials, and artisan partnerships are a few buzzwords you can look for when shopping for home decor. Symbology has some great prints available in home decor found here. Additionally, even larger stores like West Elm and Ten Thousand Villages partner with artisans and focus on ethical sourcing for products, so shop away!

This mix of salty, sweet and fresh flavors makes this summer salad one of our Summer favs. The recipe showcases Mediterranean ingredients in a super-simple way to create a bold flavor. Not only will it look beautiful on your table, but will taste delicious with the feta and olives contrasting the sweet watermelon.
These caprese-stuffed avocados are my personal pick for a winning Fourth of July spread. I’m a sucker for avocado, and serving a classic caprese inside adds a unique, protein-packed way to plate the dish and makes a great side item.
“Grilled and Dilled” Elote-Inspired Corn on the Cob
Everyone should have the pleasure of indulging in rich, flavorful “elote,” Mexican street corn covered in cream and spices. Cooking Light does the dish justice with a healthier twist perfect for your Fourth of July meal.
Classic burgers and hotdogs are great, but we tried these healthier sliders and were just as satisfied (really). Martha Stewart takes inspiration from Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwiches to create these flavorful vegetarian burgers. Topped with mango and cilantro as recommended, they were seriously delicious.
Drinks and Dessert:
Fourth of July would feel incomplete without happy hour. Get sophisticated behind the bar with strawberry mojitos and this fruity, fun sangria recipe.
For the grand finale, Marissa’s party-pleasing recommendation is this amazing triple berry tiramisu. Incorporate colorful berries into this classic dessert for our take on a red white and blue treat.
]]>With the sun shining brighter and days getting hotter, we are thrilled to announce our new summer collection! Ethereal fabrics, flowing silhouettes, and pops of ruby and azure are perfect for the magic days of summer. A bohemian chicness infuses the light and airy designs. Whether lounging by the poolside with a glass of icy lemonade or exploring a cool new city on vacation, the rompers and wraps in our summer line provide effortless style.
Traipse a beach boardwalk on a beautiful afternoon in our two-piece maxi, and slip on some wedges and bracelets for an instant day-to-night look. Head to that outdoor concert with a picnic blanket in tow and a sheer kimono jacket draped over shorts and a crop top. At a loss for what to wear to work on an oppressively hot Friday? Try one of our sleek sleeveless jumpsuits that pair perfectly with heels.
One of the signature prints of our summer line is the hibiscus flower, which has a range of meanings across world cultures. In the Pacific Islands it is a sign of hospitality and respect; in Asia it signifies the immortality of love and the invincibility of warriors. In India, where the summer line was made, the hibiscus is associated with the Hindu goddess Kali, who was born from ancient energy. She is a fierce goddess who represents empowerment: she can be both violent and lovingly maternal.
We hope that wearing our hibiscus design provides our customer with a little extra fierceness. As a company that prides itself in promoting women’s empowerment, we love the symbolism behind the hibiscus, and the beauty in all our summer designs that makes the wearer feel confident and good. So grab some sandals and a floppy hat, rock some Symbology pieces, and have a wonderful summer!
]]>Art-deco-inspired prints melt into light chiffon and buttery silk in our new spring collection. In its essence, HeART Deco is sumptuous. Putting a modern twist on iconic 1920s fashion, ethereal fabrics will keep you cool and have you dreaming of luxurious Gatsby-esque days sipping mint juleps on a terrace. The era following World War One was an exciting time for women: major gains were made regarding women’s rights, and radically different fashion reflected those changes. HeART Deco channels this fierce female spirit through bold geometric patterns and plunging necklines. It nods to artwork rich in color and saturated with stunning shapes.
The unrestrictive flapper fashion was a literal manifestation of freedom, and our flowing kimonos, plunging necklines and simple forms highlight this free-spirited vibe. One of the signature symbols of HeART Deco is our poppy print, a flower that has deep emotional significance in many cultures around the world. From remembering loved ones to developing inner peace and cultivating imagination, poppies are linked to success and love. Our geometric diamond print resonates with strength and beauty, each overlapping stroke creating positive energy. Stars embodying dreams burst across caftans. Our beaded peacock feathers signify grace and are classic staples of art deco that add sparkle to any day.
Berry, blush, and indigo tones bring to mind the refreshing coolness of a summer swim and days illuminated by sunshine. Splashed with these colors and plenty of zest to spare, HeART Deco brings out the free-spirited and glamorous woman that resides in all of us.

Lucy Doraine, film star Symbology’s Twist
Long beaded necklaces, pearls, and chokers that sat low at the base of the throat were very in during the Art Deco era. Try doubling up on jewelry by wearing both chokers and long necklaces for an interesting statement.
And just for fun…
sipping noodle juice ...and ordering foot juice
Let’s get totally zozzled. Zozzled is flapper slang for being tipsy, and just one of the countless little gems found in 1920s terminology (which is definitely the cat’s pajamas). So go ahead and brush up on your speakeasy slang so your vernacular can truly be the bees knees (the best, of course)!
